Between the thorns of the agave and the art of distillation, our company not only celebrates the tradition of artisanal mezcal, but also fervently embraces the preservation of the nature that nourishes our agave and the species that inhabit the area, thus creating an essence in every drop of our elixir.
“Rancho el Ojo” is a pristine ranch in Durango, Dgo., Mexico, and the birthplace of Origen Raíz del Espíritu. It is owned by the Saravia family, who serve as guardians of the land to preserve balance and rejuvenate the health of the grassland ecosystem. With an abundance of agave, this certified wildlife reserve also became a wonderful opportunity for the production of this artisanal spirit. Don Valentín Cortes, with his knowledge of traditional Oaxacan mezcal, joined the Saravias to build Vinata el Ojo and culminate in the creation of this spiritual elixir.
As mezcal producers, we are not only interested in achieving the final product, but we are also aware of the importance of protecting the natural environment that provides us with the raw materials for our product. In collaboration with Rio Grande Joint Venture, a binational association dedicated to the conservation of birds and their habitats, we carry out projects to preserve the biodiversity that inhabits our territory. Our strategic plan includes the planning, design, and implementation of conservation actions, applied science, and effectiveness monitoring, following the Strategic Habitat Conservation model for adaptive management.
Mezcal production not only stands out as a unique artisanal expression, but also highlights the crucial importance of preserving and caring for the natural world that provides the essential elements for this tradition. The harmony between mezcal distillation and the conservation of the natural environment is essential to ensuring a sustainable and authentic legacy.
